Match: AMD versus CITI

Venue: CECG, Bangalore

Toss: CITI won the toss and elected to bat.

CITI got off to a poor start again as their dangerous opener Varun perished for his second duck in successive games as Chethan opened with a maiden over. AMD’s new ball bowling pair of Kiran and Chetan kept it tight even as Niket tried to break free. A few lofted drives from Niket hinted at a possible counter attack. Shiv at the other end scratched around for 10 balls for a single before he holed out at mid-off.

At 14 for 2,  CITI’s captain Kranti walked in to calm nerves. He immediately set about playing a busy innings constructed on sound strokeplay in front of the wickets on the off-side. He set about peppering the arc between covers and backward point and laced 5 boundaries in that region. His partnership with the blossoming Niket at the other end steadied the ship and gave the recovery CITI seemed to be looking for. At 74/3 at the end of 10 overs things looked promising for CITI only for them to find themselves at 80/6 seven balls later.

It needed a recovery of sorts from the hard-working pair of Naveen and Vinayak to put them back on track. The pair relied on intense running between the wickets to stack runs as they ran quick singles and doubles to upset the bowling and fielding cart of AMD. Prashanth, to his credit, marshalled his troops gallantly and rang about innumerable bowling changes to upset the rhythm of this pair. The breakthrough would eventually come in the 19th over but not before the pair had put 64 runs in just 46 balls. CITI’s topsy-turvy innings finally finishing good with a potentially match-winning total of 162.

“Our bowling was bad in the back-end of the innings and our fielding was poor. We should have kept them to 140 or less,” said AMD’s captain Prashanth in the post-match ceremony.

For second game in a row, Srikanth produced a wicket for his team in the first over trapping AMD’s captain Prashanth in front. Vikas walked in and immediately set about going after the bowling by hitting Srikanth for a boundary. CITI’s captain Kranthi, though, had Vikas edge an outswinger to the ‘keeper Dheerajto reduce AMD to 10 for 2 in the second over.

As in their first game versus ODW, CITI dropped guard after two initial wickets. Poor discipline allowed Karthik and Kiran to score runs easily and build a substantial partnership. The pair was also lucky with CITI not being able to take the many run-out chances on offer.

Karthik and Kiran milked the bowling and monouvered the field with deft placements. It resulted in a 3rd wicket partnership of 78. The pair consumed less than 10 overs for it and was highlighted by the 11 boundaries the pair managed between them. Karthik fell looking to take on Naresh and holed out to Kranthi.

Naresh brought a seemingly distraught CITI back by picking up Piyush soon after. And with Kiran also run out, AMD found themselves 6 down with another 50 runs to get.

Lohith walked in and looked to build a steady partnership with Amit. Lohinth had had a poor game till then going for 35 off his 4 overs. But he would have none of it with the bat as he set about launching CITI’s bowlers well beyond the 75-plus meter boundaries at CECG. Naresh first, Varun and Srikanth later bore the brunt of Lohith’s hitting as each six seemed to get higher and longer than the previous one. It was ineveitable that he finished the game with the biggest six of the day what could have been a tricky chase ended up in a comfortable win with an over to spare.

“My bowling was not up to the scratch and I wanted to keep Srikanth back for a couple in the end,” said Kranthi when asked why Srikanth was not given the ball for another over after AMD were reduced to 2 for 10. “The main difference though was in us not being able to capitalize on the start we got and our fielding and bowling let us down badly,” he concluded.

Venue: CECG, Bangalore

For once the scorching summer heat of Bangalore gave way to some really pleasant weather to play cricket in. MCC, bereft of regulars Chetan and Bhargav, won the toss and elected to bat.

MCC suffered an early set-back as their inform opener Gunashekar was runout by Mohit. Wipro’s new ball bowlers, particularly Pruthvi, got considerable nip off the wicket troubling all MCC top-order batsmen.

Manhattan_WIPRO_vs_MCC

Pruthvi and Vikram Gowda, who got considerable lift off the wicket, built considerable pressure after the fall of Guna by not giving away any easy runs. They would soon hear fruit in the form of a double-wicket maiden for Pruthvi in the 4th over of the innings when he accounted for Syed and Shankar. Vikram Gowda followed it with another maiden over to really push MCC on the back foot as the powerplay yielded only 21 runs.

Pruthvi bowled his 4 overs up front accounting for 2 top-order wickets

MCC cut out risks to build a partnership and Vivek and Arun went about building a partnership while ensuring that there would no more casualties as Pruthvi and Vikram Gowda bowled their spells out. Arun and Vivek saw out the spells of Pruthvi and Vikram while dragging their score along at just over 5 runs an over. The change in bowling in the form of Karthik replacing Pruthvi resulted in Arun losing his patience and nick a leg-spinner to the Anand behind the stumps.

The arrival of Prasad on to the crease increased the runrate as he took chances to increase the runrate. A fortunate Prasad who survived two dropped chances struck some lusty blows in an aggressive innings of 29 and just as it looked that Vivek and Prasad would take MCC to a respectable score, Vivek nicked Aameer to the keeper Anand.

Mohammed Aameerthen ran through the middle and lower order with some fine seam bowling to end with 3 for 25 that ensured MCC would be kept to 125 at the end of 20 overs. He was supported well by his skipper Sharath who bowled a tidy spell at the other end.

Vivek played well for his 26 for MCC

Chasing a modest 126 for their second straight win, WIPRO got off to a cautious start. Their captain Sharath would later explain it to be a plan where “we decided one of the openers to bat through for 14 or so overs)”. Suman thought produced a fine spell accounting for Sharath in the second over having the WIPRO poke at one outside-off.

Suman produced another chance only to be put down at the slips. It was the chance WIPRO needed as Bharath and Mohit went about building a risk-free partnership. Karthik was severe on short balls while Mohit preferred to pepper the straight fields. A 74-run 2nd wicket partnership was ended when Karthik looked to clear the mid-wicket fielder only to find Shankar who took a juggling catch.

Vinay joined Mohit and the both of them put on an entertaining 42 runs for the 3rd wicket with lofted sixes and crisply driven boundaries. The victory was soon brought-up in the 18th over.

Mohammed Aameer was declared the Performer of the Match for his impressive figures of 4-0-25-3.

Wipro won the toss and opted to bat. Probably ACT’s best chance in the game came off the very first ball of the innings. Shankar had Karthik reaching out and had him driving his square-drive in the air only for the point fielder to put it down. From thereon, Wipro plundered runs at both ends against all bowlers.

Jagmohan seemed to be in a hurry as he went after the bowlers from the very first ball punishing ACT bowlers at will, on both sides of the wicket and off both front foot and back foot. Karthik was equally aggressive at the other end. The pair plundered 75 runs in the first 6 overs and a total well in the excess of 200 seemed a distinct possibility. ACT seemed to be missing their strike bowler Unni who was unavailable to play today and the strain of plugging too many holes was evident in the captain Sharath’s face who later admitted to missing his two regular bowlers (left-arm spinner Thomas sat the game out with a finger injury as well).

The introduction of spin in the form of Prashanth and Shitu slowed things down a little. Shitu especially seemed to generate appreciable bounce from the wicket. Prashanth kept things tight and it resulted in Prashanth picking up both the openers at the other end within a span of 10 balls. With the score reading 93/2 in just 8.4 overs, Wipro only needed to ensure that there was no collapse so as to mount an assault later in the innings.

Jagmohan's rapid 20-ball 39 gave Wipro early momentum.

Jagmohan’s rapid 20-ball 39 gave Wipro early momentum.

Wipro’s captain Sharath Narasimhan was ably supported by Mohit in consolidating their position with a useful 48 runs partnership for the 3rd wicket in just 6 overs. The pair relied on swift running between the wickets and put tremendous pressure on the ACT fielders and ran innumerable twos.

Wipro’s running between the wickets was an important feature deep into their innings as they ran 11 twos in the last 5 overs of the innings as the boundaries became harder to come by (2 boundaries in the last 5 overs). They ran a total of 22 twos in their innings (21 boundaries) and it ensured that they kept their run rate up even when the boundaries were hard to come by. Sailesh’s 30 not out in the end ensured ACT had to chase 198 for an improbable win.

ACT started the chase with Vinay going after Wipro’s bowling straight away. However, 2 wickets to Sailesh in the 3rd over when he had Paddy top-edge a pull and captain Sharath trapped in front meant Wipro had pegged ACT back very early.

Vinay's 56 was the lone bright spot for ACT

Vinay’s 56 was the lone bright spot for ACT

A determined 66-run stand between Vinay and Deepak for the 4th wicket gave ACT an outside chance of overhauling Wipro’s total if at all. The pair relied on Deepak’s ability to hold fort at one end and Vinay’s ability to hit boundaries at the other to make inroads into the disciplined middle-overs bowling of Wipro. Karthik bowled his nagging fastish leg-breaks remarkably well to finish with match figures of 4-1-8-0. His leg-spinning partner Bharath reaped the benefits of Karthik’s tight bowling at the other end by picking up 3-wickets.

It was Bharath who accounted for Vinay’s wicket in the 15th over. Vinay’s stroke filled 56 (43b, 8X4) was the only 50 of the game. His departure also meant the chase was derailed and ACT only managed to limp to 120 in 20 overs giving Wipro a massive win by 77 runs.

“I’d say the start was important and we put up good partnerships through the innings. It is not about big runs, but a string of partnerships. That is crucial in T20 cricket,” summed up the winning captain Sharath Narasimhan at the end of the game.

Match: One Day Wonders versus CITI

Venue: CECG, Bangalore

Toss: ODW won the toss and elected to bat.

Teams:

Teams: CITI (sky blue) and ODW (golden yellow)

Teams: CITI (sky blue) and ODW (golden yellow)

Coming in to the tournament, CITI was always going to be the most unpredictable of all teams playing this tournament. Just two balls into the game after ODW opted to bat first, they just proved why! The score read 11/2 after two balls. Two legal deliveries as the mercurial left-arm swing of Srikath shattered ODW’s opener Srikant’s stumps and had the other opener Jyoti caught dead in front. Also amidst the two legal deliveries were these: a wide down the leg for four, another two such monstrously swinging deliveries found the deep fine-leg fielder and a warning for bowling a waist-high full-toss. After two legal deliveries amidst a lot of chaos, it came down to this: ODW’s Melvin in the way of the most unlikely of hat-tricks that you could possibly every conjure-up!

Manhattan ODW vs CITI

Another snaking inswinger found the middle of Melvin’s bat. The solidity of Melvin lasted another 20 overs, but the potency of CITI’s new ball burst ended there. But not the extras! For much of the innings the extras outdid the score 60 to 40. As the sun reached its highest around mid-day, so seemed the deluge of extras. The usually chirpy ‘keeper Naveen of CITI seemed more immersed in the deluge of wides was bombarding him and often eluding his lunges and dives and going to the boundaries.

The very stylish Melvin en route to a 61-ball 71.

The very stylish Melvin en route to a 61-ball 71.

Problems only increased as the innings progressed for CITI with no signs of the extras abating anytime soon. It was hardly helped by the captain Kranthi himself bowling 12 wides and going for 50 in his 4 overs. The pair of Melvin and Siddharth played smartly capitalizing on some very wayward bowling and helping themselves to easy runs. The right-left pairing resulted in constant field changing and the million extras added the issue of slow over-rate to the plate of CITI’s captain Kranti. The ensuing chaos resulted in a 105 runs 3rd wicket partnership in 13.1 overs with more than a third of the runs (36) coming in the form of extras!

Melvin opened up to play more powerfully and looked to hit boundaries as the heat took toll on his running. In another fruitful partnership with Rakesh for the 4th wicket Melvin played inventively to push his team closer and closer to their desired target of 180. Melvin scored his runs wickets square of the wicket on both sides and dealt in boundaries behind square on both sides too. He eventually got out for 71 on the last ball of innings. His innings ensured ODW, who started the innings horribly, ended it as the favourites to win the game.

After having failed with the bat, the ever consistent Srikant delivered with the ball straight-up for ODW sending back the dangerous Varun for a duck in second ball of the first over. Three balls later, he sent back Shiv too. A maiden over and two wickets it ended. A similar start to the first innings where two wickets fell in the first over. Similarities ended there.

Niket's 30 was one of the few bright spots in the day for CITI.

Niket’s 30 was one of the few bright spots in the day for CITI.

The opening bowling pair of Srikant and Vinod kept CITI down to 30 runs in the powerplay overs thereby pushing the required run-rate to more than 10 very early. Languid drives and a mini counterattack from Niket not withstanding, ODW kept a tight leash on CITI’s scoring. Only when the pair of Niket and Srikanth were at the crease did the runs start to flow easily. The diminutive Niket and the lanky Srikath kindled some hope of a miracle of sorts for CITI with quick runs between them. But once Niket fell in the 13th over, it was left to Srikath to reduce the margin of defeat to a minimum.

ODW’s captain Swayam kept it tight providing strong support to Srikant as the pair totalled 6 wickets between them. Melvin capped off a marvelous all-round day for him with a wicket at the end as CITI were eventually bowled out for 139 giving ODW a victory by 34 runs.

The tournament kicked off in a fine fashion with the MCC openers Gunashekar and Shankar putting up a solid base against a sloppy AMD attack with only Ravi being able to peg the MCC openers slightly in the powerplay overs. A humid day meant, the early start not withstanding, the fielders and the batsmen would be testes with the long boundaries at the ground.

Guna’s game blossomed after a steady start and with Shankar paying handsome strokes at the other end the pair brought up 50 in the 7th over. Only Ravi seemed to be able to keep the batsmen in check and it was Ravi who eventually provided the breakthrough bowling Shankar with the score on 53 on the last ball of the 7th over.

It brought a belligerent Prasad to the crease. Prasad dominated the AMD bowlers with powerful drives and aggressive running between the wickets. The good start provided the powerful Shankar the freedom to go after the bowling and he did that with plundering success. Guru played second fiddle largely looking to put Prasad as much on strike as possible. The pairs plan paid rich dividents with them putting on 93 runs for the second wicket in just 10.1 overs.

The innings revolved around the 2nd wicket partnership with Gunashekar complementing the very aggressive Prasad (66 (38b, 9X4, 1X6)) by dropping anchor and eventually helping his team to get to 179 at the end of 20 overs. “The ground is big and it is humid. It is a test of fitness. I was cramping in the end. Thanks to the support from Prasad and Shankar, we were able to put up a big score,” said Gunashekar at the end of the game. A sentiment that was acknowledged by his captain Venu as well. AMD’s captain seemed disappointed with his team’s fielding that he termed to be “poor” but hoped to absorb the experience and defend better at the big ground in the next games.

Guna's unbeaten 70 powered MCC to 179 in 20 overs

MCC threw in a surprise by opening with the left-arm spin of Vijay in the 2nd over that paid immediate results with him trapping AMD’s Viswajeet in his first over. AMD recovered well with the very impressive Karthik (30 (22b, 5X4)) counter-attacking MCC with fluent drives and cuts. Whilst he was at the crease, AMD seemed very much capable of mounting an assault to challenge MCC’s imposing total. Losing Vikas’s wicket in the 9th over with the score at 55 meant AMD had to consolidate without taking risks for a while.

AMD’s captain Prashanth (21 (19b, 2X4)) and Kiran (34 (23b, 4X4)) added a quick-fire 55 for the 4th wicket in 6 overs and the chase seemed to be very much back on track before Prashanth was undone by Suman and the chase folded with AMD being bowled up for 134 giving MCC a victory by 44 runs.
