ODW won another toss. They elected to bat again. Melvin got off to another tremendous start. ACT lost another toss. Their bowlers struggled again. Another disastrous powerplay. It was last Sunday repeating for both teams. Only that this was being played under massive black clouds and swirling winds under severe threat of being affected by rain. Light was an issue as much as the gloomy clouds.

The light didn’t improve nor the threat of rain abate for the rest of the evening, but the sameness to the fortunes of both teams was about to change quite dramatically though.

The lanky Melvin and the short Jyoti set about giving ODW another familiar fast, aggressive start. Shankar and Benjamin tried to keep the openers under check, but they still motored along at just under 8 runs an over hardly breaking a sweat. Sharath turned to the spin of Shitu for change of fortunes and he was swiftly put away for 15 runs. He rolled the dice and got Paddy to bowl an over only to see him drift on to batsmen’s pads repeatedly and be flicked repeatedly for boundaries. Shitu was better, Paddy went for 21. The score read 81 for none in 8 overs and there were discussions of 200 in the ODW camp.

Jyoti gave ODW a tremendous start in the powerplay.

Jyoti gave ODW a tremendous start in the powerplay.

Sharath turned to the left-arm spin of Thomas who sat out the previous game with an injury to his bowling hand. Immediately, his subtle changes in pace and loop kept the batsmen guessing. The ensuing 2 runs from the over immediately had an effect as Melvin got out trying to hit out Shitu in the next over. Sashi walked in and smashed the first ball for a six making his team’s intentions clear.

Sharath replaced Shitu with the young offspinner Rohit. Rohit set straight fields and tossed the ball up inviting the batsmen to clear the field. He admitted later thst his captain had advised him to loop the ball and force the batsman to make pace. The move paid handsome rewards as the spin twins Thomas and Rohit ran amok totalling 5 wickets between them in 8 overs.

ACT’s outfielding that looked untidy till then looked sharp all of a sudden and they took all high chances that were on offer. ODW found themselves slipping rather quickly. Sharath kept his seamers out and bowled the spin of Ajay and Shitu to clean up the ODW tail for 113 as ODW failed to bat out the full 20 overs.

“The ball was skidding on to the bat and therefore good to play against medium pacers. Once I ralized that it was difficult to make pace off spinners, I didn’t bring the seamers back at all and bowled only my spinners. Thomas was good coming back from injury and Rohit had a good game too,” said Sharath at the end of the game.

“I was asked to flight the ball by my captain as the field is big and it is difficult to clear. The plan worked beautifully with the deep fielders holding on to high catches,” said a delighed Rohit at the end of the game.

ODW still looked upbeat as they do have a track record of defending small totals. Any hopes of such a repeat was quickly dispelled. Vinay pulled the second ball of the first over for a six and took 19 off the first over. Srikant surprisingly not finding his usual accurate line and length and it put ODW’s captain Swayam on the back foot immediately.

Vinay blasted his way to a 16-ball 41.

Vinay blasted his way to a 16-ball 41.

Swayam brought himself on in the place of Srikant and delivered with the wicket of Paddy in his first over. Vinay, though, was in the middle of a purple patch striking boundaries for fun.

Sharath, who walked in at the fall of Paddy’s wicket, compounded Swayam’s problems by striking five consecutive boundaries in his first six balls. Swayam tried his best by shuffling his bowlers (five different bowlers in the first six overs) in the hope of getting a breakthrough, but it was not to be as 70 runs came in the first six overs.

There was relief finally for Swayam when he trapped Vinay for a whirlwind 41 (16b, 6X4, 2X6). Deepak joined Sharath and immediately went about achieving the target in as less overs as possible in an attempt to bridge the net run rate that was lagging at -3.85 after last Sunday. Sharath fell to Melvin 3 overs later, but Dheeraj along with P Mathur ensured that their run rate never dipped under 10. The pair went about garnering the remaining runs with runs on the off-side for Deepak and on the on-side for P Mathur.

The pair brought up a thumping win for ACT with 6.4 overs to spare.

“We have defended short totals previously. But the start they got was tremendous and I changed bowlers in the hope of getting wickets. Our middle order didn’t capitalize on the great start provided by our openers and that resulted in us not even being able to bat out our allotted overs,” summed up Swayam on his team’s performance.

For once the scorching summer heat of Bangalore gave way to some really pleasant weather to play cricket in. MCC, bereft of regulars Chetan and Bhargav, won the toss and elected to bat.

MCC suffered an early set-back as their inform opener Gunashekar was runout by Mohit. Wipro’s new ball bowlers, particularly Pruthvi, got considerable nip off the wicket troubling all MCC top-order batsmen.

Manhattan_WIPRO_vs_MCC

Pruthvi and Vikram Gowda, who got considerable lift off the wicket, built considerable pressure after the fall of Guna by not giving away any easy runs. They would soon hear fruit in the form of a double-wicket maiden for Pruthvi in the 4th over of the innings when he accounted for Syed and Shankar. Vikram Gowda followed it with another maiden over to really push MCC on the back foot as the powerplay yielded only 21 runs.

Pruthvi bowled his 4 overs up front accounting for 2 top-order wickets

MCC cut out risks to build a partnership and Vivek and Arun went about building a partnership while ensuring that there would no more casualties as Pruthvi and Vikram Gowda bowled their spells out. Arun and Vivek saw out the spells of Pruthvi and Vikram while dragging their score along at just over 5 runs an over. The change in bowling in the form of Karthik replacing Pruthvi resulted in Arun losing his patience and nick a leg-spinner to the Anand behind the stumps.

The arrival of Prasad on to the crease increased the runrate as he took chances to increase the runrate. A fortunate Prasad who survived two dropped chances struck some lusty blows in an aggressive innings of 29 and just as it looked that Vivek and Prasad would take MCC to a respectable score, Vivek nicked Aameer to the keeper Anand.

Mohammed Aameerthen ran through the middle and lower order with some fine seam bowling to end with 3 for 25 that ensured MCC would be kept to 125 at the end of 20 overs. He was supported well by his skipper Sharath who bowled a tidy spell at the other end.

Vivek played well for his 26 for MCC

Chasing a modest 126 for their second straight win, WIPRO got off to a cautious start. Their captain Sharath would later explain it to be a plan where “we decided one of the openers to bat through for 14 or so overs)”. Suman thought produced a fine spell accounting for Sharath in the second over having the WIPRO poke at one outside-off.

Suman produced another chance only to be put down at the slips. It was the chance WIPRO needed as Bharath and Mohit went about building a risk-free partnership. Karthik was severe on short balls while Mohit preferred to pepper the straight fields. A 74-run 2nd wicket partnership was ended when Karthik looked to clear the mid-wicket fielder only to find Shankar who took a juggling catch.

Vinay joined Mohit and the both of them put on an entertaining 42 runs for the 3rd wicket with lofted sixes and crisply driven boundaries. The victory was soon brought-up in the 18th over.

Mohammed Aameer was declared the Performer of the Match for his impressive figures of 4-0-25-3.

Toss: WIPRO won the toss and elected to bat.

Teams:

ACT in bottle green

Wipro won the toss and opted to bat. Probably ACT’s best chance in the game came off the very first ball of the innings. Shankar had Karthik reaching out and had him driving his square-drive in the air only for the point fielder to put it down. From thereon, Wipro plundered runs at both ends against all bowlers.

Jagmohan seemed to be in a hurry as he went after the bowlers from the very first ball punishing ACT bowlers at will, on both sides of the wicket and off both front foot and back foot. Karthik was equally aggressive at the other end. The pair plundered 75 runs in the first 6 overs and a total well in the excess of 200 seemed a distinct possibility. ACT seemed to be missing their strike bowler Unni who was unavailable to play today and the strain of plugging too many holes was evident in the captain Sharath’s face who later admitted to missing his two regular bowlers (left-arm spinner Thomas sat the game out with a finger injury as well).

The introduction of spin in the form of Prashanth and Shitu slowed things down a little. Shitu especially seemed to generate appreciable bounce from the wicket. Prashanth kept things tight and it resulted in Prashanth picking up both the openers at the other end within a span of 10 balls. With the score reading 93/2 in just 8.4 overs, Wipro only needed to ensure that there was no collapse so as to mount an assault later in the innings.

Jagmohan's rapid 20-ball 39 gave Wipro early momentum.

Jagmohan’s rapid 20-ball 39 gave Wipro early momentum.

Wipro’s captain Sharath Narasimhan was ably supported by Mohit in consolidating their position with a useful 48 runs partnership for the 3rd wicket in just 6 overs. The pair relied on swift running between the wickets and put tremendous pressure on the ACT fielders and ran innumerable twos.

Wipro’s running between the wickets was an important feature deep into their innings as they ran 11 twos in the last 5 overs of the innings as the boundaries became harder to come by (2 boundaries in the last 5 overs). They ran a total of 22 twos in their innings (21 boundaries) and it ensured that they kept their run rate up even when the boundaries were hard to come by. Sailesh’s 30 not out in the end ensured ACT had to chase 198 for an improbable win.

ACT started the chase with Vinay going after Wipro’s bowling straight away. However, 2 wickets to Sailesh in the 3rd over when he had Paddy top-edge a pull and captain Sharath trapped in front meant Wipro had pegged ACT back very early.

Vinay's 56 was the lone bright spot for ACT

A determined 66-run stand between Vinay and Deepak for the 4th wicket gave ACT an outside chance of overhauling Wipro’s total if at all. The pair relied on Deepak’s ability to hold fort at one end and Vinay’s ability to hit boundaries at the other to make inroads into the disciplined middle-overs bowling of Wipro. Karthik bowled his nagging fastish leg-breaks remarkably well to finish with match figures of 4-1-8-0. His leg-spinning partner Bharath reaped the benefits of Karthik’s tight bowling at the other end by picking up 3-wickets.

It was Bharath who accounted for Vinay’s wicket in the 15th over. Vinay’s stroke filled 56 (43b, 8X4) was the only 50 of the game. His departure also meant the chase was derailed and ACT only managed to limp to 120 in 20 overs giving Wipro a massive win by 77 runs.

“I’d say the start was important and we put up good partnerships through the innings. It is not about big runs, but a string of partnerships. That is crucial in T20 cricket,” summed up the winning captain Sharath Narasimhan at the end of the game.
