Teams: CITI (sky blue) and ODW (golden yellow)

Coming in to the tournament, CITI was always going to be the most unpredictable of all teams playing this tournament. Just two balls into the game after ODW opted to bat first, they just proved why! The score read 11/2 after two balls. Two legal deliveries as the mercurial left-arm swing of Srikath shattered ODW’s opener Srikant’s stumps and had the other opener Jyoti caught dead in front. Also amidst the two legal deliveries were these: a wide down the leg for four, another two such monstrously swinging deliveries found the deep fine-leg fielder and a warning for bowling a waist-high full-toss. After two legal deliveries amidst a lot of chaos, it came down to this: ODW’s Melvin in the way of the most unlikely of hat-tricks that you could possibly every conjure-up!

Manhattan ODW vs CITI

Another snaking inswinger found the middle of Melvin’s bat. The solidity of Melvin lasted another 20 overs, but the potency of CITI’s new ball burst ended there. But not the extras! For much of the innings the extras outdid the score 60 to 40. As the sun reached its highest around mid-day, so seemed the deluge of extras. The usually chirpy ‘keeper Naveen of CITI seemed more immersed in the deluge of wides was bombarding him and often eluding his lunges and dives and going to the boundaries.

Problems only increased as the innings progressed for CITI with no signs of the extras abating anytime soon. It was hardly helped by the captain Kranthi himself bowling 12 wides and going for 50 in his 4 overs. The pair of Melvin and Siddharth played smartly capitalizing on some very wayward bowling and helping themselves to easy runs. The right-left pairing resulted in constant field changing and the million extras added the issue of slow over-rate to the plate of CITI’s captain Kranti. The ensuing chaos resulted in a 105 runs 3rd wicket partnership in 13.1 overs with more than a third of the runs (36) coming in the form of extras!

Melvin opened up to play more powerfully and looked to hit boundaries as the heat took toll on his running. In another fruitful partnership with Rakesh for the 4th wicket Melvin played inventively to push his team closer and closer to their desired target of 180. Melvin scored his runs wickets square of the wicket on both sides and dealt in boundaries behind square on both sides too. He eventually got out for 71 on the last ball of innings. His innings ensured ODW, who started the innings horribly, ended it as the favourites to win the game.

After having failed with the bat, the ever consistent Srikant delivered with the ball straight-up for ODW sending back the dangerous Varun for a duck in second ball of the first over. Three balls later, he sent back Shiv too. A maiden over and two wickets it ended. A similar start to the first innings where two wickets fell in the first over. Similarities ended there.

Niket's 30 was one of the few bright spots in the day for CITI.

Niket’s 30 was one of the few bright spots in the day for CITI.

The opening bowling pair of Srikant and Vinod kept CITI down to 30 runs in the powerplay overs thereby pushing the required run-rate to more than 10 very early. Languid drives and a mini counterattack from Niket not withstanding, ODW kept a tight leash on CITI’s scoring. Only when the pair of Niket and Srikanth were at the crease did the runs start to flow easily. The diminutive Niket and the lanky Srikath kindled some hope of a miracle of sorts for CITI with quick runs between them. But once Niket fell in the 13th over, it was left to Srikath to reduce the margin of defeat to a minimum.

ODW’s captain Swayam kept it tight providing strong support to Srikant as the pair totalled 6 wickets between them. Melvin capped off a marvelous all-round day for him with a wicket at the end as CITI were eventually bowled out for 139 giving ODW a victory by 34 runs.

Match: MMavericks Cricket Club (M.C.C) versus AMD

Venue: CECG, Bangalore

Toss: MCC won the toss and elected to bat.

The tournament kicked off in a fine fashion with the MCC openers Gunashekar and Shankar putting up a solid base against a sloppy AMD attack with only Ravi being able to peg the MCC openers slightly in the powerplay overs. A humid day meant, the early start not withstanding, the fielders and the batsmen would be testes with the long boundaries at the ground.

Guna’s game blossomed after a steady start and with Shankar paying handsome strokes at the other end the pair brought up 50 in the 7th over. Only Ravi seemed to be able to keep the batsmen in check and it was Ravi who eventually provided the breakthrough bowling Shankar with the score on 53 on the last ball of the 7th over.

It brought a belligerent Prasad to the crease. Prasad dominated the AMD bowlers with powerful drives and aggressive running between the wickets. The good start provided the powerful Shankar the freedom to go after the bowling and he did that with plundering success. Guru played second fiddle largely looking to put Prasad as much on strike as possible. The pairs plan paid rich dividents with them putting on 93 runs for the second wicket in just 10.1 overs.

The innings revolved around the 2nd wicket partnership with Gunashekar complementing the very aggressive Prasad (66 (38b, 9X4, 1X6)) by dropping anchor and eventually helping his team to get to 179 at the end of 20 overs. “The ground is big and it is humid. It is a test of fitness. I was cramping in the end. Thanks to the support from Prasad and Shankar, we were able to put up a big score,” said Gunashekar at the end of the game. A sentiment that was acknowledged by his captain Venu as well. AMD’s captain seemed disappointed with his team’s fielding that he termed to be “poor” but hoped to absorb the experience and defend better at the big ground in the next games.

Guna's unbeaten 70 powered MCC to 179 in 20 overs

MCC threw in a surprise by opening with the left-arm spin of Vijay in the 2nd over that paid immediate results with him trapping AMD’s Viswajeet in his first over. AMD recovered well with the very impressive Karthik (30 (22b, 5X4)) counter-attacking MCC with fluent drives and cuts. Whilst he was at the crease, AMD seemed very much capable of mounting an assault to challenge MCC’s imposing total. Losing Vikas’s wicket in the 9th over with the score at 55 meant AMD had to consolidate without taking risks for a while.

AMD’s captain Prashanth (21 (19b, 2X4)) and Kiran (34 (23b, 4X4)) added a quick-fire 55 for the 4th wicket in 6 overs and the chase seemed to be very much back on track before Prashanth was undone by Suman and the chase folded with AMD being bowled up for 134 giving MCC a victory by 44 runs.

Match: CECC vs Cognizant

Venue: CECG, Bangalore

Toss: CECC won the toss and elected to bat.

In a game that saw both sides experiment with selection and choices of players for various positions, CECC’s many starts and stops came back to hurt them in the end. And badly so.

Electing to bat first against a new set of players Cognizant were trying out, CECC started reasonably well getting to 14/0 in 2 overs and 35/0 in 5 overs before Jobin’s indifferent start came to an end looking to up the rate. Soon, Goutham, who looked to be in a hurry was undone by Natarajan’s loopy off-breaks having him edge an attempted turn to leg for a single to short mid-wicket. Shoukath’s run-out for 1 soon after meant the innings was off-rails and needed a partnership to put it back on track.

Ashsih with 22 and Bhargav with 18 built  what looked a promising partnership but both got out when quick runs were needed to achieve the target of 140 that seemed par for the wicket. Gaurav’s lusty hitting not withstanding Maraswamy and Niraj pegged the lower order back with repeated strikes bundling out CECC for 114.

Bhargav's 18 and 1-wkt haul being one of the few positives for CECC

Bhargav’s 18 and 1-wkt haul being one of the few positives for CECC

As the Cognizant captain Himakanth, who hurt his leg while bowling, later said “we are are glad that many players we tried out today played to potential.” CECC’s captain Muthu was more rueful with “not able to make the most of the powerplay that put pressure on the middle order.”

A target of 116 was never going to be enough to defend and with Goutham giving away 15 off the first over, things only got difficult. Triya however produced a good burst of 4 overs straight up producing 3 chances only for CECC to grass 2 of them.

Indifferent bowling and fielding hurt CECC as everytime they built pressure the resulting chance was not taken. Dilshad played freely attacking spinners and quicker men alike as Cognizant coasted to a 6 wicket win with 4 overs to spare.

Brief Scores:

CECC 114 all out in 20 overs (Goutham 24 (22b, 3X4), Ashish 22 (20b, 1X4)) lost to Cognizant 115/4 in 16 overs (Dilshad 39 not out, Bhargav 1/9) by 6 wickets

Match: CECC vs Accenture Stallions

Venue: CECG, Bangalore

Toss: Accenture Stallions won the toss and elected to field.

CECC Team Picture (Match Day):

Squatting (L to R): Yugank, Kaustubh (C), Shoukath, Dinesh, Srikrishnan

On a bright Sunday morning Goutham started the innings with Jobin on a murderous note. Right from the first ball, the determination of going after Stallions’ bowlers was very evident with both openers belting the bowlers at both ends with boundaries.

The injured comeback opener Jobin looked to be in a hurry scoring 3 boundaries in the very first over of off-spinner Karthik. Karthik however eventually won the battle having Jobin drag one on to his stumps in his next over.

With the scoreboard just reading 24, after the fall of Jobin, Shoukath walked in at no.3. The pair immediately went about keeping the runrate and were involved in another good partnership – the first 50 came in just 5 overs. Both the batsmen never seemed to have any trouble facing Stallions and the boundaries flowed frequently and quite easily.manhattan_06Apr2013

The pair put on another 100-plus partnership. Goutham’s innings contained various flicks to the leg with the odd pull stroke inbetween. His leg-side heavy scoring was well complemented  by Shoukath’s off drives and chips to the outfield for many twos and threes. Goutham soon reached his 50, followed by the century partnership between the two and then Shoukath completing his 50 too – all these happened in less than 10 balls. This was the pair’s 4th 50+ partnership and 2nd 100+ partnership making them the most successful pair for the team as a partnership.

Soon after getting to his 50, Shoukath was undone by the visiting skipper Prasoon with a flighted leg break. The host skipper Kaustubh walked in calm and composed. It was only from his bat the dangerous vrooming sound of the new Wisden ball was heard. It was pleasant to watch the skipper playing some perfect cricketing strokes – especially the straight drive that was almost close to his idol’s favorite shot – the real master blaster Sachin!

runworm_06Apr2013

Goutham disappointed CECC by failing to register the first century for the club when he fell 21 runs short trying to clear the legside boundary only to find the fielder at deep square leg. But quick runs from Kaustubh ensured CECC had set a whopping target of 230 for Stallions.

Goutham's 79 helped CECC to get to 229 in 25 overs

Goutham’s 79 helped CECC to get to 229 in 25 overs

Goutham continued to fire with the ball too. Having 4 slips, he swung the ball out beautifully. The stallions had not much clue. The Stallions chase showed early promise with Rahul and then Prasoon looking confident playing some booming drives.

The CECC seamers kept bowling fuller length and got the ball to deck off the track. The seamers Shoukath, Goutham, Gauam and Jobin kept the ball up and inflicted dismissals behind the wicket. The cordon of Muthu, Jobin and Kaustubh coming up with sharp reflex catches behind the stumps. While Shoukath and Gaurav took sharp catches in the infield.

CECC rounded off a good win with Gautam bowling a sharp spell of seam-up and was unlucky not to pick up more than the one wicket he did to show for his spell. With Vicky picking up a wicket with his first ball on debut and two in his first over, the match was well sewn up.

This win brought up CECC’s 6th win a row. And the win by 91 runs brought up their second biggest win in terms of runs.
