The rains stayed away and The CouchExpert T20 Championship  got off to a sparkling start with NSN, GE and CECC registering wins. Here’s how the games panned out:

Match 1: NSN versus ACT

13th July 2013 (7:30 am – 10:30 am)

ACT won the toss and elected to bat first

The game started under gloomy skies, the occasional odd drizzle and lazy soothing breeze best suited for a lazy weekend extended morning sleep. Yet, ACT openers Prashanth and Vinay started brightly punishing a slightly errant NSN opening spell by both Manish and Nitin. Prashanth, coming back from a shoulder injury shrugged off the indifferent form he showed in The CouchExpert Sunday League T20 two months ago and got into his stride with confident feet movement and strokes. If anything he seemed hesitant finishing his strokes showing signs that the shoulder injury was still preying in his mind.

The pair kept rotating the strike thereby ensuring that they were really under no pressure for any length of time to attempt a rash stroke. Runs flowed and by the time Vinay got out in the 10th over, the runs were flowing at 8 an over. Deepak joined Prashanth and the pair stuck to the formula of keeping the dot balls to a minimum. Deepak ensured that Prashanth got as much of the strike and Prashanth gradually opened up to up the scoring rate post the 12th over. Prashanth showed tremendous fitness as he pushed Deepak into taking many 2s and 3s well into the innings. Prashanth’s 57 set the platform up for ACT to get to 170-plus, but a late stutter meant they had to settle for a score of 152. As for NSN, barring captain Gangadhar, the rest struggled to bowl to their field or to a set plan.

NSN responded to chasing 153 quite brilliantly as openers Avinash and Jithendra started quite confidently against the pace-spin combo of Paddy and Thomas. The pair was measured in its approach keeping the risks to a minimum whilst always keeping abreast with the required rate. Only the extra pace of Rakesh seemed to hurry them up in an otherwise easily constructed opening wicket partnership of 61 in slightly over 8 overs. ACT, over time, have relied on their many slow bowlers to restrict opposition batsmen and quite successfully too.

The spin combination of Shithu and Rohit slowed down the innings with Shithu accounting for Jithendra and Arun while Rohit accounted for Prakhar.  And when the captain Gangadhar was run out in the 14th over, the asking rate had crept up to 8.3. Anil, then, played a cameo taking ACT’s captain for 17 runs in the 15th over to reduce the chase to slightly over run-a-ball. In the span of an over Anil had turned the game on its head and Sharath was left to rue his decision to bowl a second over.

Sharath quickly turned to his quickest bowler Rakesh and he responded by knocking over the very dangerous Anil to even things out. With 25 still needed and Rakesh still breathing fire and NSN already 6-down, ACT still had a chance.

As it turned out, 10 were needed off the last over with 2 wickets in hand for NSN bowled by Paddy. In a remarkably eventful over, Deepak dropped a catch at covers that cost his team 2 runs and Paddy missed to collect a throw from the boundary to effect a run-out as well. With 3 needed off the last ball, Paddy bowled a wide down the legside. The batsmen then scrambled a 2 to long-off to round-off a remarkable win for NSN off the last ball.

Brief scores: ACT 152/4 in 20 overs (Prashanth Mathur 57 (51b, 5X4), Deepak 32 (27b, 1X4), Rakesh 1/31, Prakhar 1/34) lost to NSN 153/8 in 20 overs (Jithendra 36 (28b, 5X4), Anil 26 (21b, 3X4, 1X6), Shithu 2/28, Rakesh 1/19) by 2 wickets

Match 2: GE versus Unisys

13th July 2013 (11:30 am – 2:30 pm)

GE won the toss and elected to bat first

GE won the toss and elected to bat under skies that was bright for the first time in the day as daylight broke through the clouds seemingly vanishing the gloom with it. Having won The CouchExpert T30 Quadrangular only a fortnight earlier, GE started the game and the tournament as one of the title contenders. The opening pair of Shimjith and Rajnikanth that had served them so well in the previous tournament were in their elements as they went after Unisys’s new ball pairing of Prashanth and captain Harish from the word go. They rattled along at a rate of 10 an over in the first 4 overs before Rajnikanth was snapped up by Sanjeev off Murthy.

Abhishek joined Shimjith and the pair looked to keep the score rattling along. In the quest of scoring quick runs, GE lost quick wickets as Unisys clawed their way back with back-to-back wickets of Shimjith, Abhishek, Dheeraj and Mayank in a span of 4 overs. It required the calm and reliable hand of Arvind in partnership with Harsha to steady the ship as GE ground out runs with singles and twos and the odd boundary. Arvind opened out towards the end to play punishing strokes on the leg side as he took GE past 150.

Unisys had a horror of a start losing Sharath and Vivek in the very first over to Dheeraj. The GE bowlers Dheeraj and Abhishek kept the lid tight as Unisys struggled to score any runs at all. Almost every mistake of theirs was punished by GE with their wickets. Even slacking slightly between the wickets cost them their wicket as Harish found out while going for a single in the 4th over.

Sanjeev and Bharath then went about repairing the innings with a careful partnership. With the run-worm hardly getting off the floor, GE were firmly in control of the game by now, it was a case of minimizing the margin of defeat for Unisys. Gradually Sanjeev and Bharath found their touch and eventually the odd boundary as well once the opening bowlers gave way to slow bowlers. The pair managed to put on 58 runs for the 4th wicket in just under 10 overs before Sanjeev fell victim to another run out by Vinoth.

The introduction of Vinoth into the bowling attack also spelt doom for Unisys as he snapped up 3 wickets in his 1.1 overs. In between all this, Arvind managed to hit the stumps from deep point to runout Mallik to round off a miserable day for Unisys where nothing much went for them. Their captain Harish acknowledged saying, “we are a far better team than what we have shown ourselves to be today. Just about everything went wrong for us. We should be able to do a lot better in our coming games.”

Brief scores: GE 153/6 in 20 overs (Arvind 50 not out (41b, 6X4), Harsha 25 (16b, 3X4), Murthy 2/12) beat Unisys 89 all out in 17.1 overs (Sanjeev 33 (42b, 3X4), Bharath 21 (31b, 3X4), Vinoth 3/1, Dheeraj 2/12) by 64 runs

Match 3: CECC versus Wowzers

14th July 2013 (8:30 am – 11:30 am)

Wowzers won the toss and elected to field

CECC started the game without its captain and vice-captain as they were unavailable. After spraying his first handful of deliveries on either side of the pitch, Wowzers’s new ball bowler managed to land one on target that found the stand-in captain Goutham’s top edge to give Wowzers a tremendous start.

The pair brought up the team 50 in 5 overs and when Shoukath deposited one of his booming drives over the long-off boundary CECC seemed to be running away with the game very early. Things turned around when another screaming drive of Shoukath seemed heading to the boundary when Wowzers’s captain Ravi intervened to take a very sharp catch at covers. It cut open the skin on his thumb and had him tend to it and sit out for a bit, but there was little doubt that he had produced the magic his team needed in bringing his team back into the game.

The introduction of Karthik further dented CECC as he sent back Gokul and Bhargav off successive deliveries. Gautam joined Jobin and the pair resorted to milking the bowling while riding troubled waters. Just as Jobin seemed to be branching out into playing pleasing drives a break in concentration accounted for him. Gautam, then joined by his twin Gaurav, kept maneuvering the fielding with drives and dabs. The twins were busy between the wickets and they put on 45 runs in a little over 6 overs to put the innings back on track. Eventually CECC finished with 161 and Karthik was the standout performer for Wowzers keeping the CECC middle-order in check with his nagging accuracy.

CECC’s opening pair of Goutham and Gaurav kept Wowzer’s in check with their discipline and lines. Wowzers’s openers looked to shuffle to offside while looking to make runs on the leg side. Both openers perished in this pursuit. Captain Ravi walked in and played a watchful hand so as to prevent further damage. Bhargav, though, had Suresh caught pulling in his first over. The bowling hero for Wowzers, Karthik, came in and started out aggressively looking to play powerful strokes and looked the only Wowzers batsman looking to take the fight to the CECC camp.

The introduction of Dinesh changed all that. He rattled the Wowzers’s middle-order with his pace and soon sliced through the middle-over in a 3 over spell that fetched him 4 wickets. With Shoukath backing his thrilling batting cameo with 2 wickets with the ball, the innings hastened to an end in the 18th over giving CECC a comfortable 75-run win.

Brief scores: CECC 161/9 in 20 overs (Shoukath 31(19b, 3X4, 1X6), Gautam Rajagopalan 33 (36b, 2X4), Karthik 3/21, Pruthvi 2/33) beat Wowzers 86 all out in 17.3 overs (Karthik 18 (21b, 1X4), Ravi 14 (23b, 1X4), Dinesh 4/14, Shoukath 2/18) by 75 runs

Match: Mmavericks Cricket Club (MCC) versus IIPM

Venue: CECG, Bangalore

Toss: MCC won the toss and elected to field.

MCC opted to field first after the game was reduced to 28-overs-per-side after a delayed start. With Chethan unavailable and Venu out with bad health, it was understandable that MCC invested on their batting in this game.

The thin bowling of MCC though would be shown-up straight away as Varun, taking over from Kranth as captain, took Suman for 17 runs in the first over. Poorn lines and wides continued to be the scourge of MCC bowling through the innings. Varun, though, was in his elements very early and punished some poor early bowling by MCC.

Manhattan_MCC_vs_IIPM_9thJune2013

Though Guna accounted for Naveen in his first over, the usually tiday Guna was also seen rusty struggling to find a consistent length. Varun had been joined in by Aussain and the pair painted a picture of contrasting batting: Varun with his skip outside the crease to every ball with a high-winding back-lift to go after the bowling and Aussain with his measured balancing self at the crease looking to play each ball on its merits.

SAM_0365

Aussain was masterful in engineering a big total for his team

Varun’s opening burst had ensured that IIPM capitalized on the field restrictions in the first 6 overs by raving to 55. With the field spread and only the left-arm spin of Vijay looking threatening the pair resorted to percentage cricket by hitting the holes in the outfield for singles and milked MCC’s bowling with ease.

Varun fell 5 short of his 50 when he tried to loft Yeshwanth out of the ground. He had provided a tremendous base for his team by then as his team was closing in on a hundred in just over 10 overs. His exit was followed by 5 minutes of chaotic batting by the new man Manju. He struggled to put bat to ball as Vijay had him in knotts with his subtle varions in loop and spin with his accurate left-arm spin. Soon, a diving Prasad at point had him and Aussain in panic with Manju being eventually run out.

Ravi joined Aussain in the middle and the pair put on a good show of very skillful batting in the middle overs. Ravi, with his driving, and Aussain with his great ability to manoeuvre deliveries into gaps with his hands. The pair was very aggressive between the wickets. The pair had little trouble against the medium-pace or the spin of Vijay and Sunil as the cut, pulled, swept and drove with great confidence and timing.

Partnerships_MCC_vs_IIPM_9thJune2013

The pair put on 41 in a mere 31 balls before Ravi was out. Aussain then controlled the innings beautifully by stepping up the temp in the last third of his innings. Having played second fiddle to Varun first and then to Ravi, he then turned aggressor with some powerful strokes of his own. His energy never waned as he ran hard and put pressure on the infielders of MCC often extractiong overthrows from them. He would put pressure on the outfielders too with his speed between the wickets that would result in fumbles and extra runs.

Over 50 runs came in the back 6 overs as he and the wicket-keeper Govid plundered the MCC bowling. Govind was cheeky with his strokes while Aussain looked increasingly good as the innings progressed. That they managed to score 207 in the end was largely due to Aussain’s pacing of his innings.

SAM_0372

Bhargav’s unbeaten 66 was the only bright spot on an otherwise miserable day for MCC

Chasing at close to 7 an over meant that MCC had to get to a good start. With their regular 30-overs opener, Venu out with a injury, the onus was on Guna to anchor the chase. Srikanth though had the better of Guna as he bounced him out.

Syed was adjudged LBW soon after and Naveen tried his best to steady the innings along with Bhargav. Kranthi and Srikanth though ensured that there would be no easy runs as MCC struggled to break free. The required-run rate went north of 10 with more than half the overs remaining and even with stroke-makers like Shankar and Prasad still to come, it was obvious that they had left the charge a little too late.

Bhargav, though, played a mature hand rotating the stike and going at run-a-ball for most part. But Naveen’s inability to find boundaries hurt their chances and with Shankar providing the much needed impetus on his arrival in the 15th over, it allowed Bhargav to break-free as he looked to take more chances.

The quick wickets of Shankar and Prasad back-to-back meant that there would be no miracles to expect and the last overs were played out with Varun trying out all his bowlers ahead of the next game and MCC played out the overs in trying to reduce the margin of defeat so as to not fall back a lot in the net run-rate.

For his brilliant batting and a catch and a wicket, Aussain was declared the Performer of the Match.

Match: AMD versus GE

Venue: CECG, Bangalore

Toss: GE won the toss and elected to field.

With the monsoons having set in, this probably is the best time of the year weather-wise to play cricket in Bangalore. As the tournament kicked-off under clear skies and balmy weather, Dheeraj won the toss and inserted AMD in.

Captain Dheeraj was in his elements straight away keeping the AMD openers, Kathik and Viswajeet, honest with his accurate left-arm swingers. However, Abhishek was wayward bowling from the other end. Abhishek, with his tremendous sprint to the wicket generated good pace but was too short and too wide to cause any discomfort to the batsmen. The aggressive Viswajeet was severe with cuts and pulls. Karthik joined in the fun too as both seemed to be putting in a fine exhibition of putting away short deliveries.

Manhattan_GE_vs_AMD_8thJune2013

Dheeraj replaced Abhishek with Babu and he was immediately cut away for two boundaries in his first over. As the bowlers struggled to find lines and lengths, AMD brought up their 50 in the 8th over without breaking into a sweat. If anything the running between the wickets was the only unimpressive bit and eventually it was one poor call too many that accounted for the wonderful opening partnership.

Mallikarjun's 1 for 21 brought GE back into the game after a poor start

Mallikarjun’s 1 for 21 brought GE back into the game after a poor start

The spin twins Mallikarjun and Arvind put the brakes on AMD scoring as they controlled the next 9 overs giving away only 37 runs with only 2 boundaries coming in this period. The lanky offie, Arvind, varied his trajectory well while the leggie Mallikarjun troubled the batsmen with the pace he managed off the wicket. He often had the batsman playing from the crease and often beat them with his sliders, one of which cleaned up AMD’s captain Prashanth.

Having managed to ride the rough waters, Vikas and Kiran were expected to launch in after the spinners gave way to the 6th and 7th bowlers of GE. However, Manish, coming in 6th change would have it all his way with his tidy medium-pace. He sliced through the under belly of AMD with the wickets of Vikas and Kiran in his first over and then accounted for Darshan in his second. AMD’s hopes were dented further when Arvind accounted for the big hitting Lohith. With almost 10 overs to go and already 7 down it looked unlikely that AMD would even bat out their allotted overs. They would eventually be bowled out for 143 in 26.1 overs.

“We were going at a good rate through the innings even when we kept losing wickets. Perhaps not utilizing the full quota of overs hurt us in the end. We should have capitalized better on the start we got and should have got to a 180 kind of score at least,” said Prashanth at the end of the game.

Partnerships_GE_vs_AMD_8thJune2013

Chasing 144 in 30 overs, AMD had to make early inroads into the GE batting to put them under pressure to perhaps cause a panic. More so with Rajnikanth opening the innings. His last innings at this ground against Accenture in a practice game produced the only hundred at this ground insofar.

Rajnikanth and Rajesh had shared a massive 150-plus opening stand two weeks ago at this ground. They seemed to be in no hurry and in no trouble as AMD bowlers struggles to keep them in check.

Rajnikanth, a very powerful player who likes to hit the ball in the air got his stride in with three boundaries off Ravi in the second over. Soon, his trademark pulls, cuts and lofted straight drives scorched the CECG turf. His partner Raja did the smart thing by putting Rajnikanth back in strike as often as he could.

Rajnikanth cuts en route to a 51-ball 67.

Rajnikanth cuts en route to a 51-ball 67.

Everything AMD threw at Rajnikanth was met with disdain. Cuts, back cuts, pulls and drives embellished his belligerent innings as the 50 was raised in the 7th over. Soon Rajnikanth brought up his 50 with a lofted 6 over long-off. He had broken open the game and when he was eventually dismissed in the 11th over, the score was 87 with less than 60 needed in almost 20 overs.

AMD fought back well with quick wickets but the game had drifted away too far for them to claw back. Eventually GE won the game in the 21st over with 5 wickets.

“The spinners brought us back into the game after their top-order really looked good to take the game away,” said Dheeraj at the post-match ceremony. He also credited his openers for chasing the total down easily.

“I feel very comfortable going after the bowling from the first ball. That is my natural game,” said Rajnikanth at the end of the game. He added, “It is like my home ground now.” With three fifties and a hundred in 6 games at this ground and with the promise of more to come, his team will feel good about their chances.

Match: WIPRO versus ODW

Venue: CECG, Bangalore

Toss: WIPRO won the toss and elected to field.

Teams:

WIPRO in maroon

WIPRO

ODW

Top of the table coming into the last Sunday of the game took on bottom of the table. Wipro only needed to win the game to ensure that the title was theirs. ODW on the other hand needed a good game to end the campaign on a high.

Wipro won the toss and chose to field. They were coming off a semi-finals loss in another tournament earlier in the day and seemed determined and very keen not to slip this one through their grasp. With the game reduced to 17-overs a side, they opened with twin leg-spin attack of Bharath and Karthik.

Manhattan_WIPRO_vs_ODW

Swayam’s forgettable tournament with the bat ended with a 5-ball duck. Arvind’s intent seemed aggressive against the spinners, but the runs came in a trifle. The spinners had spun a web around the ODW batsmen and all they seemed to manage to do was find fielders or thin air repeatedly.

Arvind and Jyoti soon perished, but Melvin found an able ally in Srikant. They found momentum as wrist spinners gave way to finger spin of Sri Karthik and medium pace of Vikas Gowda and Aameer. A sluggish start was then overcome with a stroke-filled partnership that managed 55 runs in 33 balls to push the score beyond 100 that seemed unlikely only half an hour ago.

A target of 119 wasn’t much, but it was a tremendous comeback riding on the back of another 50 by Melvin. Wipro though, largely bowled and fielded well in restricting ODW to 118.

ODW’s debutant left-arm seamer Tejomay raised hopes by trapping Karthik in front with a full swinging delivery in just the second over. Mohit walked in at the fall of the first wicket and then set about flogging ODW’s bowling.

An aggressive right-hander who likes to sit on his back-foot, Mohit produced a series of delightful strokes all around the wicket. He managed to quickly get on to the back-foot pulling any short deliveries and with tremendous power. Equally impressive was his balance in waiting for the balls drifting on to his legs that he glanced with great touch repeatedly to the fine-leg boundary.

Mohit's unbeaten 68 (32 balls) ensured Wipro won in a canter

Ajay provided a steady hand at the other end ans Mohit went about dismantling the ODW attack. Everything that Swayam threw at Mohit didn’t seem remotely enough as he brought up his 50 in the blink of an eye.

Victory was inevitable and quickly so as it came in just 9 overs to bring great joy to the Wipro camp. While it was dejection and ruing of many narrow misses for ODW throughout their campaign, Wipro on the other hand produced their game where most chipped in some game or the other.

Their captain Sharath was relieved at the end. He said, “we are coming from a bitter loss in the semis this morning. This victory is a revenge of sorts after a poor show in the morning. The team has been brilliant in this tournament with bowlers sticking to their gameplan and fielders supporting them well. And batsmen have chipped in in all games. It has been a total team effort.”
